Essential Oils for Digestive Ailments

Essential Oils for Digestive Ailments

It is estimated that about one in four persons suffer from some sort of gastrointestinal (GI) problem severe enough to interfere with their lives. As massage therapists, we may not directly deal with digestive issues in our clients. However, we can include other complementary modalities, such as aromatherapy, that can help to alleviate some of their problems.

Aromatherapy has been shown effective in easing some of the common symptoms of GI ailments, which can range from heartburn, to constipation or diarrhea, to severe abdominal pain. Aromatherapy uses the power of scent to affect both the mind and body. Oils extracted from plants and processed into highly concentrated pure essential oil strength are used. They are generally mixed with a carrier oil and then used topically during a massage session. Because they are so concentrated, these essential oils are highly potent, and very little is needed to be effective.

One extremely popular essential oil used to relieve digestive problems is peppermint. Its effectiveness in heartburn relief, reducing gas and easing the pain of ulcers has been known for a long time.

Cinnamon and ginger, perhaps most commonly recognized as cooking spices, are also available as essential oils used in easing GI tract disorders. Not only is cinnamon essential oil antimicrobial in nature, but it also helps to boost the metabolism and is thought to help in weight loss. Ginger is the essential oil of choice for nausea or vomiting, and helps in tonifying the digestive system.

Lastly, anise or fennel essential oils can also be helpful for easing gas pain and nausea, as well as to help balance hormones.

More and more, the use of essential oils is being recognized as an effective complementary way to treat various ailments. Being educated in the art and science of aromatherapy is very important. Learn more about the proper use of essential oils used in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.
